Knowing me, knowing you.
Our latest innovative project is in collaboration with Khayaal Theatre Company to develop a workshop which tackles issues of identity, citizenship, and cultural diversity.
The project took place in Stopsley High School, Icknield High School and Luton Sixth Form College in Spring 2010.
Workshops were devised to help students look at aspects of citizenship and identity in the multi-cultural world around us. The aim of the project was to help young people realize that underneath all the differences seen outwardly, everyone is the same inside. Every person has feelings and goes through life in similar ways. This tied in with the central theme of the workshops; that identity is dynamic and influenced by our life experiences as well as how we view others.
Aims of the Project
The workshops were developed to include role plays, drama, music, games and discussions. Tales from Muslim history and folklore were dramatized by Khayaal Theatre Company actors. The workshops got students thinking about what identity is, and how it is felt and expressed by people in different ways. Drums and percussion instruments were shared and played to symbolize the universal beat of humanity (this was also compared to the beat everyone shares, the heartbeat). Role plays were used to help the students realize other people’s feelings and how some people treat others in ways that they themselves would not want to be treated. An activity of building a pyramid together using sticks was included in the workshop which helped students unite for the task and really brought everyone to one level. This showed that if people want to do something for their community, town, or world etc. it is possible if we forget our differences and unite for a cause or common goal.
This project really shed light upon the issues of citizenship and identity for the young people who participated in the workshop. Feedback received was positive and totally commending the content and hoping in the future similar projects would be developed where
there are hands-on activities as well as dramas and music. The Knowing Me Knowing You project demonstrated that that knowing me is in many ways dependent on and influenced by knowing you.
